Hear from our graduates
“Since joining HM Advisory as an Intern in March 2025 and moving into the Graduate Accountant role in May, it’s been such an exciting and challenging learning experience, especially coming into an industry that’s completely new to me. I had the opportunity to work on diverse matters across different industries and see my studies come to life in everyday work. From day one, HM Advisory has been supportive, and my team takes the time to guide me through the processes and help me understand how everything works, which boosts my confidence in taking ownership of each task. I appreciate that HM Advisory has recognised my contributions to the firm and has provided me with meaningful mentorship that continues to enhance my skills, contributing meaningfully to client outcomes as I continue to grow with the firm. HM Advisory’s culture of collaboration and supportiveness creates an inspiring environment that encourages me to grow and take on new challenges. Looking forward, I’m excited about the future of the firm in delivering effective and innovative solutions to clients.”

“My time at HM Advisory has demonstrated what it means to be a valued and respected member of the workplace.
Throughout my internship, I was able to develop practical knowledge of accounting and insolvency, gain confidence in financial analysis and the preparation of documentation. HM Advisory has supported this progression from Intern to Graduate Accountant through constant mentorship, training opportunities and regular feedback.
The firm has been extremely supportive of my studying and always providing encouragement and flexibility during my exam periods.
The most inspiring thing about the firm is the genuine culture and strong sense of collectiveness that is evident during our work, but also in our after-work activities.
Looking ahead, I am enthusiastic about continuing my career with HM Advisory, and to bring the knowledge from my law degree to contribute further to the firm. The commitment of the firm to my development as a colleague and as a person is greatly appreciated and I am excited to be a part of the firm’s future.”

"Joining HM Advisory as a graduate accountant with no prior experience in insolvency was a steep learning curve, but the journey has been incredibly rewarding. From the beginning, the team has been welcoming and supportive, regularly checking in and offering guidance whenever I needed it. Everyone has been approachable and genuinely committed to helping me grow, which made all the difference as I adjusted to a new and challenging environment.
One of the things I value most about HMA is its professional yet supportive culture. The firm fosters continuous learning, and the team is always willing to share their knowledge and experience. Through hands-on work, regular training, and ongoing mentorship, I’ve been able to build both my technical skills and confidence.
I’ve since progressed from a graduate to an accountant, and I’m genuinely grateful that HMA has recognised my efforts and contributions. Being part of a team that values development and hard work has made a meaningful difference in my career."

“I wanted two things from a graduate role: 1) to learn as fast as I can, and 2) experience as much as I can – HM Advisory helped me achieved both.
During my time as a Graduate Accountant, I had the opportunity to deal with complex, yet exciting, matters that I would only experience further along in my career, which I was fortunate enough to experience early with HM Advisory. The technical and interpersonal skills that I cultivated as a Graduate Accountant have led to my promotion as an Accountant within my first year in the industry. My journey is a testament of how much a Graduate Accountant can learn and grow in this organisation.
The people and culture are the best parts about HM Advisory. There is a continuous commitment to ensuring that everyone is seen and heard, and the emphasis that I reach my goals, both professionally and personally, have accelerated my skills in the industry and facilitated my growth as a person. HM Advisory has supported me in my studies to become a Chartered Accountant, a mentorship program with the Women in Insolvency and Restructuring Victoria (WIRV), and my attendance at industry events and social activities.”

“My time at HM Advisory has been a brilliant experience that shed light on an industry that university students often don’t hear much about. It’s opened up opportunities for me that I’d not previously considered.
One thing that is very clear about HM Advisory is that it’s an organisation that truly cares about your development. I was fortunate to be involved in multiple continuing professional development (CPD) sessions with the whole team, as well as receive one-on-one mentorship and guidance from members of the Corporate team. I’ve learnt about the processes that follow with insolvency, as well as sharpened my analytical, writing and accounting skills. It has been so interesting to learn about where businesses can go wrong, and I have enjoyed applying these insights to the world around me.
The firm has a very supportive culture, and you are encouraged to reach out whenever you need help. The people here are kind and help to make starting your career a much less intimidating challenge. What’s more, everyone was more than happy to share their experiences, which I appreciate as I navigate my career choices.
Overall, HM Advisory offers a great opportunity to learn in a growing firm and I cannot wait to see where it goes in the future.”

“If I was to use one word to describe my experience at HM Advisory over the past month, I would say ‘inspiring’. I have met so many brilliant individuals who have both inspired and encouraged me along my journey here, and I feel more than lucky to have had these learning and growth opportunities here at HM Advisory (HMA).
Before even applying to join the team at HMA last semester, I was just like most students my age – confused and overwhelmed with all the possibilities out there, yet not knowing what I truly wanted out of a career. However, things from the classroom started to make a lot more sense after having worked in a corporate environment, and I have learnt so many interesting and useful things that were never taught in school. In my opinion, one of the best things about working in insolvency was knowing that your work had a real impact on real people, especially people who were in difficult situations. This has inspired me career-wise and given me a much clearer direction in career choices. I feel much more confident and empowered when faced with opportunities and decisions now, and I am grateful for HMA for my growth.
However, the people at HMA were the true highlight of my time here. Everyone is hardworking yet approachable, they are very understanding and are always willing to help no matter how stressful the day is. As someone who was working in a business environment for the first time, I found it much less intimidating than expected; in fact, you can always catch good banter in the office. As a student, I think HMA provided the perfect learning environment for me: it is fun, engaging, but also packed with learning opportunities.”

“During my time at HM Advisory, I have learnt some of the key fundamentals and processes surrounding insolvency. It is quite a niche area of accounting and prior to my internship I had very limited knowledge of this field. Throughout the internship I have learnt a variety of technical skills relating to insolvency such as how to use different accounting software packages, analyse financial data, reconcile bank statements, and conduct financial investigations. I have also improved my soft skills in areas such as professional writing, teamwork, and problem solving.
The highlight of my internship at HM Advisory was when I was sent to Melbourne for a week to work on a trade-on for a high-profile case of ours. I was visiting the sites daily and got to do some hands-on work for the case. I learnt a lot from this trip, and it was great to see firsthand how a complicated case is managed.
I also have had the opportunity to have one-on-one conversations with both partners of the firm and it was very interesting to learn about their careers and where they see HM Advisory going in the future.
Seeing how ambitious and enthusiastic everyone is at HM Advisory is very inspiring and there is an excellent workplace culture. I really appreciate how welcomed all the staff at HM Advisory made me feel. Everybody was encouraging and friendly and made time to help me when I had difficulties. I look forward to coming back and working for HM Advisory when I finish university for the year.”
